The suspect, Michael French, 29, Aliso Viejo, also is believed to be involved in two other crimes, a domestic violence incident and reckless driving, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Todd Hylton said. Deputies first received a call about a domestic violence incident in San Clemente

about 7:30 p.m., with a tip that the suspect lived in a neighboring city, Hylton said. Further details about that call were not immediately available. About 7:40 p.m., deputies received a call of a reckless driver in Mission Viejo, with the vehicle description matching the one given to deputies in San Clemente, Hylton said.





While searching for the vehicle, another call came in of a shooting behind a business near the area of Marguerite Parkway and La Paz Road, Hylton said, adding that the description again matched the suspect vehicle.

Deputies arrived and found a woman with a non-life threatening gunshot wound in the area of Marguerite and La Paz, he said.



They later found the suspect vehicle, but French had fled on foot.

“He was taken into custody a short time later” not far from the suspect vehicle, Hylton said.

French and the woman did not know each other, he said.

“It appears that she was just a witness to him being involved in a traffic collision,” Hylton said. “And it sounds like he fled that scene, pulled into a parking lot and she pulled in after him.”

It wasn’t clear why she followed him, or if she was in the car when she was shot.

News video from OC HAWK appeared to show a man wearing a gray shirt and black shorts climbing up a hillside. At one point, the man takes his shirt off before he is taken into custody by deputies at the top of a hill.

Video also showed investigators searching an area near MasterCare Car Service in the 27200 block of La Paz Road.

Breaking News: “Well over” 50 people were injured and an unspecified number died in an Amtrak train derailment in Montana, an emergency official said.
The derailment, involving five cars of the Empire Builder train, happened near Joplin, Mont., on Saturday afternoon.

At least 3 people were killed and 50 others were injured after an Amtrak train derailed in Montana on Saturday afternoon, setting off a frantic response by rescuers who scrambled to extricate passengers from cars, the authorities said.

Amtrak said that five cars on an Empire Builder train had derailed at roughly 4 p.m. local time. About 147 passengers and 13 crew members were on board, “with injuries reported,” Amtrak said in a statement.


The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office said that three people were confirmed dead.


Ms. Frickel said the train, which was headed west, derailed just outside Joplin, Mont., which is about 200 miles north of Helena.




She said that rescuers from six counties were responding to the scene and that as many as five hospitals were on standby to receive injured passengers. There were also a number of medical helicopters standing by, she said.

“Everybody who is alive has been extricated from the wreck,” Ms. Frickel said.

Officials had evacuated survivors to two separate sites and were doing a head count. Emergency responders planned to put people up in hotels once their medical needs had been seen to.

“Every county around is assisting,” said Sheriff Donna Whitt of Toole County, Mont.


Amtrak said in a statement that it was “working with the local authorities to transport injured passengers, and safely evacuate all other passengers.”

Megan Vandervest, who was going to visit a friend in Seattle, boarded the train on Friday night from Minneapolis, where she lives.

On Friday, Chesterfield Police stated that they have identified at least 13 teens that were involved with the fight. It took around 20 police officers to break up the fight and even more responded to the incident.

Many of you have undoubtedly seen the video that’s been making its way around social media of the large fight - involving dozens of students - that took place yesterday at one of our local schools. Out of respect for the innocent students and in an effort to not glorify the violence, I have elected to not share the video link.


I want to highlight a piece of this video that I found particularly compelling. Chesterfield County Police School Resource Officer Anthony Bowen used his body to shield a young man from a mob attacking a student. The officer was stuck several times in the process.

Reasonable people can disagree about the role of officers in school; however, only an unreasonable person can make the argument that students are safer in schools when officers are removed from assignments where they can build relationships with the youth in our community and come to the aid of others when threatened with violence…which, unfortunately is a common feature within all modern social endeavors.


This officer conducted himself bravely, selflessly, and without regard for his own well-being. That’s how our people are expected to perform and with rare exception, that’s how we conduct business. We are human, and we often work within challenging conditions, under great stress, and with incomplete information. We don’t claim to be perfect, but our hearts are virtuous and our mission is noble.

I’m proud of this officer, thankful for his service, and want to make it known exactly why I remain committed to ensuring our children remain safe within their learning environments. Thank you, Anthony.

This message is being shared with families at Meadowbrook High School after a fight broke out between multiple students. The school went into lockdown. Police say no injuries reported and no charges/arrests at this poinT.

Police said the large presence was necessary due to rumors of weapons being used in the fight.

Ciera Swift said she lives across the street from the school and is the parent of a sophomore there. She said she could hear students saying knives were pulled during the fight.

“One of the students was like ‘It was chaos,’ then one of them said under his breath that ‘It was a stabbing,’” said Swift.

“The way I see it is if you’ve got the kids locked down in the classrooms, obviously there’s a weapon involved,” said Swift’s cousin, Sarah Joyner.

In a video circulating around social media, school resource officers could be seen getting hit as students attacked one another in the hallway.

Multiple students said when the fight happened, everyone went into lockdown and was told to barricade in their classrooms.

Police confirmed there were no weapons used in the fight.


Despite multiple reports from parents and students seeing several students in handcuffs and one student being wheeled out on a stretcher into an ambulance, police said no one was injured, arrested or charged, and the investigation is ongoing.

Chesterfield County Public Schools released the following statement:

“I want to share with you that we are working with Chesterfield Police to investigate the circumstances that led to an altercation among students to which staff and police responded. 

The school went on lockdown while additional Chesterfield Police came to the school to assist. I sincerely appreciate that the great majority of our students were not involved, but we are very concerned about those students who engaged in the altercation. Not only did this disrupt the instructional setting and dismissal, but there are serious consequences for those who may have been involved.

“It’s scary nowadays. I lived across the street for about six years; I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’ve never seen this many cops out here,” said Swift.


“It’s just crazy and hectic. Who wants to send their children to school when these things are happening?” said Joyner. “It’s almost like you have to keep your children under lock and key because of what the world is coming to.”

According to a separate warrant filed in a Sarasota County, FL Court, Gabby Petito's mother received a "odd text" on August 27th - a message which is described as "the last communication anyone had with" Gabby.

Petito's mother, Nichole Schmidt, said the last video chat she had with her daughter was August 24 or 25, though they exchanged text messages for a few days following. She said she is unsure if it was her daughter actually sent those text messages. 
 
Florida police obtained the warrant to search a hard drive found in the white van that Petito and Brian Laundrie used at the time of her disappearance. 
 
This warrant, filed by the North Port Police Department, is not associated to the activity at the Laundrie family's home. 
 
The detective wrote that Petito's mother "received an 'odd text' from Gabby. The text message read 'Can you help Stan, I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls.

' The reference to 'Stan,' was regarding her grandfather, but per the mother, she never calls him 'Stan.' The mother was concerned that something was wrong with her daughter." 
 
Her family said that final message was "not normal behavior" for Petito and became more worried about her, according to police. 
 
My heart is absolutely breaking for the Petito family. I pray that autopsy results can reveal what happened and that Brian is found and justice is served accordingly. Gabby did not deserve this. 

Multiple law enforcement agencies will resume their search for Brian Laundrie in the Carlton Reserve today. We are also expecting the autopsy results from the remains believed to be Gabby Petito to be released from Wyoming today, which will answer a lot of crucial questions.
