Ferrari's Carlos Sainz wins Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix; Verstappen, Hamilton retires

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz clinched victory at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, marking a triumphant comeback just two weeks after undergoing appendicitis surgery. The race witnessed a dramatic turn as Red Bull's reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, faced his first retirement in two years.

Sainz, who secured the only non-Red Bull victory last season, fended off competition from teammate Charles Leclerc. The final-lap crash involving Mercedes driver George Russell triggered a virtual safety car, clearing the path for Sainz's decisive win.

Reflecting on his remarkable performance, Sainz expressed his elation, stating, "It was a really good race. I felt really good out there." Despite physical challenges, he managed to maintain his pace and clinch victory. "But very happy, very proud of the team, and happy to be in a one-two with Charles here," added the jubilant Spaniard.

Meanwhile, McLaren's Lando Norris secured third place, dashing the hopes of teammate Oscar Piastri, who aimed to secure Australia's first podium at the F1 event.

Verstappen, who had triumphed in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, faced early setbacks, retiring on the fourth lap due to a brake malfunction. The Dutch driver lamented his experience, stating, "That's why already it felt the car was really weird to drive in some corners. It was just very snappy."

The race also witnessed disappointments for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who retired early due to a power unit issue, and his teammate George Russell, who crashed into barriers, prompting the virtual safety car.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez claimed fifth position, with Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin finishing sixth. Alonso faced scrutiny from stewards regarding Russell's crash.

Yuki Tsunoda secured eighth place, earning Red Bull their first points, while Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen of Haas rounded out the top ten.

Williams endured challenges, with Alex Albon finishing outside the points in teammate Logan Sargeant's car, following a directive to swap cars due to Albon's Friday practice incident.

CD Guadalajara headed into the 2023-24 edition of the Liga MX with the aim of securing domestic silverware for the first time since 2017, after falling just short last time around, firstly finishing ninth in the Apertura phase and losing in reclassification.

The campaign culminated in a 3-0 beating at the hands of Toluca at the end of April, and they would return to action against the same opposition this year under the new management of Rafael Dudamel, improving their fortunes somewhat to begin with a goalless draw away from home.

Los Rayos then hosted Club Tijuana last time out, and with their wait for a first goal continuing, they looked set to fall to a 1-0 defeat following Carlos Gonzalez's 73rd-minute opener for the visitors, but Alan Montes would pop up with an important leveller in injury time to force a share of the spoils.

Having now avoided defeat in each of their opening two matches, Dudamel's side will hope to put a first notch in their wins column on Friday but certainly face a tough test on their travels.

The Green Bay Packers arrived at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore and did what any NFC-leading team preparing for a deep postseason run should do against a physically tired opponent: they won.

The game between Green Bay and Baltimore on Sunday was originally thought to be a preview of a future Super Bowl meeting. In any event, the Ravens came into the game with a weary option, in need of help defended and hostile lines, and were without Jackson, who was out of the game due to a lower leg strain suffered in the second quarter of last week's loss to Cleveland.

The Packers intended to pull away with the game, breaking a 14-14 tie at halftime with a 17-3 scoring surge in the fourth quarter. Aaron Rodgers completed 23 of 31 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers.

However, that 31-17 lead with nine minutes to go wasn't as big as it appeared.

Baltimore led a daring push behind their backup quarterback, whose quickness caused the defense to struggle once more. Huntley scrambled for 73 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and completed 28 of 40 throws for 215 yards and two touchdowns, channeling his inner Jackson.

The Cincinnati Bengals climbed to 8-6 with a win over the Denver Broncos, dropping Baltimore to 8-6 and losing its formerly commanding grasp on the AFC North. In the meantime, the Cleveland Browns have a 7-6 record and play the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday in a game that was rescheduled from Saturday to Monday and has the potential to move into first place in the division with a win.

Previewing Wednesday’s Gazette area regional volleyball finals

2A: No. 7 Dyersville Beckman (32-11) vs. No. 8 Wapsie Valley (25-11), at Independence

Probably the best of Wednesday’s 16 regional finals. Beckman looks to return to state after falling in the regional semifinals last year; the Blazers had qualified the previous three years. A co-champion of the rugged Wamac Conference East Division, Beckman sports one of the state’s top players in Iowa State recruit Kiersten Schmitt (5.38 kills per set, .347 efficiency). Wapsie Valley is up a class after qualifying in 1A in 2019 and 2020. The Warriors were one of the favorites to win the small-school title last year but were unable to compete due to a COVID outbreak between regionals and state. Six starters are back from that squad, led by Lydia Imbrogno (3.69 kills per set).

1A: No. 3 Springville (32-4) vs. Saint Ansgar (19-9), at Waterloo West

Springville is accustomed to November volleyball, and a win Wednesday would land the Orioles at the state tournament for the seventh time in nine years. They’re favored to advance behind a veteran crew; six starters are back from last year’s team, led by Tri-Rivers West Division player of the year Nia Howard (8.89 assists per set), who also is one of six players with more than 100 kills this season. Lauren Wilson leads the team with 2.57 kills per set. Springville avenged a late-season loss to Edgewood-Colesburg, sweeping the Vikings in Monday’s regional semifinal. Saint Ansgar carries a 13-match winning streak, and only one of the Saints’ losses have come against 1A competition. Four hitters average more than 1 kill per set, none more than 2.

1A: No. 4 Lisbon (36-6) vs. No. 12 North Tama (29-10), at Van Horne

Lisbon’s catchphrase is #BreakTheRock, and a regional-final victory would be a breakthrough, indeed. The Lions are 0-3 in regional finals, including an upset loss to Springville in 2019. But this is Lance Kamaus’ best team yet, led by junior Peyton Robinson, the Tri-Rivers Conference East Division player of the year. Robinson averages 3.28 kills per set, but is even more valuable in the back row, where she posts 4.51 digs per set. Ava Czarnecki adds 3.26 kills per set, Kali Nelson 9.51 assists per set. The Lions are 20-2 against 1A competition, with both losses coming to Springville. North Tama earned state trips in 2017 and 2019, and looks to get back behind a new nucleus piloted by junior setter Jadyn Rausch, who averaged 6.56 assists per set and is second on the team in kills

West Ham vs Southampton final score

West Ham vs Southampton was a thriller at the London Stadium on Boxing Day as Ralph Hasenhuttl saw his Saints side stun David Moyes’ Hammers.

Southampton took the supereminent three times through Mohamed Elyounoussi, James Ward-Prowse and Jan Bednarek, as West Ham battled back beforehand in the alternate half through cover Michail Antonio and Said Benrahma, but it was n’t enough to end their poor run of form.

A topsy-turvy clash saw both brigades go each- out for the palm, as Saints edged a five- thing suspenser to secure their first palm in seven games and move on to 20 points for the season.

West Ham have now won just one of their last seven PL games and sit on 28 points.

Three effects we learned from West Ham vs Southampton

1. Set pieces save Saints They dominated the first half but only had a 1-0 lead, also they looked shaky in the alternate, but ever set pieces dug them out of a hole to win it. Southampton have to take chances when they're on top but their set pieces were the key at West Ham. 2. West Ham miss Zouma, Ogbonna This game added up how important West Ham are missing Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna. The brace were their first- choice center tails as they surged into a top four spot beforehand in the season but both went down with injuries in recent weeks. Zouma is due back in January, while Ogbonna is likely out for the season. Their stage- sways, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop, were dragged each over the place and did n’t look comfortable. West Ham have still had a fine season but they're conceding too numerous pretensions and have let in 24 in their opening 18games.However, or indeed finish in the top six, that has to ameliorate, If they want to push for a top four finish.

3. Boxing Day chaos This was a classic Boxing Day hassle. Both brigades went for it and put on a show rather than keeping it tight. That led to a great spectacle and both West Ham and Southampton are delightful to watch week in, week out for the neutral.

He and Manuel Lanzini upped the tempo for the Hammers, and Antonio jounced home Craig Dawson’s title from a corner to make it 1-1.

Declan Rice flashed a shot wide soon after as West Ham were well on top title into the final third of the game.

Broja was also hauled down by Craig Dawson when he was clean through on thing, and VAR was used as Kevin Friend awarded a penalty kick for Dawson’s alternate foul on Broja.

Wild 10 nanosecond spell

Ward-Prowse slammed home the spot kick to make it 2-1 to Saints but twinkles late it was position again.
